Krugersdorp at a glance
Krugersdorp owes its origin to two important events in the history of South Africa, namely the Transvaal War of independence (1881) and the discovery of the Witwatersrand Goldfields (1886). These two occurrences with their far-reaching political and economic consequences, were mainly instrumental in causing the establishment of two townships, originally apart, but subsequently united under the name of Krugersdorp .
The one township became the business center of the West Rand Goldfields, while the other sprang into existence by reason of the position and significance of the Paardekraal Monument.
Falling under the municipality known as Mogale City, Krugersdorp is essentially an old mining town, regarded as the industrial hub of western Gauteng . Gold, manganese, iron, asbestos and lime are all mined in and around Krugersdorp and its history is steeped in mining annals / memoirs, which began when gold was discovered on the farm Paardekraal. Due to its rich history, Krugersdorp has some beautiful old buildings and churches well worth visiting.
Krugersdorp has thoroughly modernised itself. It has ultra-modern sport facilities including a sports stadium, a contemporary business centre including shopping malls and numerous smaller shops, but what draws people to Krugersdorp are the various activities close by.
On 1 November 1994 the Krugersdorp Transitional Local Council was promulgated and incorporates Kagiso, Munsieville, Azaadville and Muldersdrift. The greater Krugersdorp , now officially known as the Krugersdorp Local Council, has approximately 350 000 residents.
Krugersdorp with its mild climate, interesting topography and rich cultural/historical background, and has often been described as the treasure chest of the West.
Krugersdorp offers potential visitors all the benefits of being in a city, such as shops, schools and all amenities, but without the disadvantages. Our crime rate is considerably lower, our neighbourhoods are quiet and children can still play outside.
This beautiful town boasts, amongst other things, its own Game Reserve with exclusive facilities and 1400 hectares of lush bushveld carrying plenty of game, various national monuments, a bird sanctuary in the middle of town, the world famous Sterkfontein Caves, just 12 kilometres north of Krugersdorp , where a myriad stalagmite and stalactite formations and guided tours through the limestone structures via a huge underground lake makes for an exciting visit. The Sterkfontein Coves is where the first fossil of the 'ape man' was found and some of the oldest remains of ancestral humans have been found at this World Heritage Site.
Other attractions include an eco adventure park, the South African National Bird of Prey Centre and the Railway and Steam Train Museum, where steam train fanatics can revel in the 90 odd steam engine locomotives. The 1400 hectare Krugersdorp Game Reserve provides a really worthwhile half day trip and a quiet break from the world. The reserve is one of the best kept secrets in this part of the world and is seldom busy, and because it is easily driveable in a day, you're almost guaranteed of seeing game that includes buffalo, hippo, zebra, and giraffe's. A separate area encloses the lions, and there are optional night drives.
The Krugersdorp Council offers negotiable incentive schemes for all investors and our doors are always open to discuss the needs of our business community. We still have adequate and suitable land for development, be it industrial or residential.
Krugersdorp is easily accessible from all major centres such as Pretoria, Johannesburg and the Johannesburg International Airport. We are close to Lanseria Airport and we also have our own Jack Taylor Airfield.
Comfortable suburbs and lovely parks for recreation finish the picture. Krugersdorp is a modern thriving town with a colourful past. Combine all these facts as you will agree that Krugersdorp is one of the most attractive options in Gauteng.
